Tuition

Lynda undertakes tuition on a class basis.

She works in a large, roomy studio, providing comfortable conditions and ample space for each class member.

Lynda is a popular tutor who is able to inspire and teach students of all levels, from newcomers to art who are less accomplished, to those who are becoming artists in their own rights. Her ability to share her knowledge and to offer one-to-one tuition to each student, even in a class setting, makes the classes popular – there is often a waiting list.

Lynda offers full-day classes once a month, and students are given suggestions for ‘homework’ to help them develop the work they have done in class during the previous weeks. In the summer she offers full-day workshops near her home in Donhead St Andrew.

Please contact Lynda for information on courses, availability of places and pricing.

Art Society Bookings

As with her classes, Lynda has the gift of being able to offer stimulating talks that are both interesting and informative.

Her talks, art demonstrations and one-day workshops are so popular with art society members that she is now taking bookings for up to a year in advance.

Please contact Lynda for more details.

Courses and Workshops

Drawing and Painting Masterclass at Halswell House, Somerset

Tuesday 3–Thursday 5 February 2009

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy an art experience that you will never forget, combining a luxury stay in a stately home with a drawing and painting masterclass under the expert tuition of Lynda Appleby, one of the South’s most popular art tutors.

To be held in Halswell House, Somerset, this William and Mary period mansion has an exquisite original Chinese room, 17th century ballroom, sweeping carved staircases, a 300-year-old ornamental lake with follies scattered throughout the grounds, and a decked roof-top that offers spectacular views across the Somerset countryside.

For those with some experience in painting, this masterclass will take its inspiration from Halswell itself, exploring the dramatic effect of light flooding through gigantic arched windows onto interiors, as well as looking out through windows to the Somerset countryside beyond. This course is part of a week-long programme of events for the first Tulip Fair at Halswell House. With tulips providing stunning centre-piece decorations in the grand reception rooms, this will be a flower-painter’s paradise.

All participants will be encouraged to take a fresh approach to their work, seeing, exploring and painting with new eyes, whether it be an interior setting, a landscape viewed through the window, a flower arrangement or one of the object d’arts that tell the story of those who created and lived in Halswell in its original glory.

Accommodation will be in luxury bedrooms. Each room is different and unique. Each one is a visual delight for the artist. All rooms are furnished with exquisite Georgian, Regency or Edwardian furniture with original ornate beds in polished walnut, topped with luxury pocket-sprung mattresses for ultimate comfort. Bathrooms are a skilful blend of antique hand-basins with marble floors and modern power showers. Soft white towels and monogrammed bathrobes complete the luxury experience. All participants will be given their own room, unless couples request shared occupancy. And you can end the day with a dip in the hot tub on the roof!

Halswell offers infinite inspiration for the artist, and is the ultimate art venue that will both nurture you and feed your soul.

This three day painting course, including luxury accommodation with single occupancy in each room, full board including breakfast, refreshments throughout the day, light lunch, 3-course evening meal and personal tuition with Lynda Appleby is £360. Participants also have the optional extra of booking the candlelit Baroque musical evening on Thursday 5th February at a £10 discount per ticket.

Featured in both the Daily Mail and the book In Search of the Perfect House–500 of the Best Buildings in Britain and Ireland, the author, Marcus Binney, when asked which was his favourite, suggested that Halswell could be the most perfect house with its wonderful position, romantic setting and lovely follies.
